3rd Annual Community History Showcase

The Ahmed Iqbal Ullah Race Relations Resource Centre, a library specialising in the study of race, migration and ethnicity, recently held their 3rd annual Community History Showcase. As part of a Heritage Lottery Funded project to increase the representation of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities in archives around Greater Manchester, the showcase aimed to encourage community organisations to run their own heritage projects.

This year’s showcase welcomed heritage professionals from local museums and archives, as well as participants from at least 10 community organisations. The showcase was also successful in bringing together 4 inspirational speakers who spoke about the challenges and achievements of their heritage projects. We were pleased to also have the support of Louise Sutherland and Antonia Canal from the Heritage Lottery Fund who attended to offer advice and support.

The community history showcase is not only a platform for sharing knowledge but also an opportunity for heritage professionals to understand the barriers that some groups face when trying to develop a project. We have taken on board specific areas where difficulties are most prominent and we are now planning another skills and knowledge sharing event later this year.
