Bringing nature into our campus: Biodiversity events in Michael Smith quad
The integration of biodiverse green spaces within urban settings holds immense value. These spaces improve human health and wellbeing and help to combat the global challenge of biodiversity decline.
It is therefore extremely important to embrace biodiverse green spaces within our own University campus. This is the mission of the quad wildlife garden in the Michael Smith Building, which is open to all staff and students who work there.
This beautiful area has raised beds, wildflower borders, hay meadows, and tall trees that are homes for birds like blue tits and special plants like military orchids and bluebells. You’ll also find different British fruit trees, like apple and medlar trees.
The quad’s dedicated gardeners Issy and Lily are spearheading a series of events aimed at spotlighting environmental sustainability within our campus community.
These events, open to both staff and students, will be hosted in the quad/café area of the Michael Smith building.
Here are the upcoming Quad Events:
- Christmas crafting – Wednesday, 6 December, 12 – 2pm
Join us for a festive and social gathering, where individuals can come together to craft decorations for the quad.
- RSPB Big Garden Watch- Wednesday, 31 January, 12 – 2pm
Participate in the RSPB Big Garden Watch, an initiative that encourages observing and documenting local wildlife, in our quad.
