Cycle September: pedalling towards sustainability
In September, our University embraced a fun and friendly biking competition called Cycle September. The initiative encouraged staff and students to ditch their cars and hop on their bicycles for their daily commute. Over the course of the month, participants logged their cycling journeys with the Love to Ride platform, building up points as they went.
By choosing to cycle, we reduced our carbon footprint and helped decrease traffic congestion around campus. In total, participants from the University cycled 22,026 miles in September. That’s the equivalent of saving 2,744 kg CO2 from being emitted into the atmosphere. This achievement did not go unnoticed and led to us placing 1st in Greater Manchester and 3rd overall in the UK.
Cycling to work is not only great for the environment but also for your physical and mental well-being. It’s a fun and cost-effective way to get some exercise, reduce stress, and connect with fellow riders. That’s why we also held a webinar for colleagues interested in commuting by bike as part of the initiative. The webinar provided a great opportunity for staff to gain a more in-depth insight into our Cycle to Work scheme and the cycling facilities available on campus.
Cycling is not just for September though, it’s a great way to travel all year round.
