Different kind of radio wave: Jodrell Bank partners with Doves for an evening of cultural engagement
The University’s Jodrell Bank Centre for Engagement is known for its cutting-edge science, but it’s also a “spiritual home” for musicians, too.
We were thrilled to host local band Doves and their fans for an exclusive listen to their latest album, Constellations for the Lonely, paired with an out-of-this-world planetarium show in our very own Space Dome.
This unique blend of science and culture was a fantastic opportunity to learn how our work at Jodrell has inspired artists in the local community. Formed in Wilmslow, just down the road from our site, Doves’ guitarist Jez Williams explained how the Lovell Telescope has always played a role in their creative process:
“We take what we call a pilgrimage to Jodrell Bank […] when we’ve got all the songs for an album, we embark on a drive to there just to work out the album running order, so we’ve always associated it with our music […] It’s our spiritual home, I reckon.”
This event is just one example of Jodrell’s widening cultural engagement programme, where we regularly collaborate with a variety of artists – from textiles to music, photography and beyond!
