Green Careers Mission: students unite to tackle sustainability challenges

This month, Greater Manchester universities, in collaboration with local industry partners, launched an exciting initiative developed by the GM Civic University Board’s Green Skills Working Group. Students from the five Greater Manchester Universities formed cross-institutional, interdisciplinary groups to tackle key local sustainability challenges. These challenges were presented by industry partners and aligned with the priorities of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA).

The day was a huge success with over 60 students engaging quickly with the challenges and collaboratively developing impactful solutions. One participant said, “Projects like these are essential for bridging theory and practice, giving us hand-on experience in creating actionable sustainability strategies.”

The day consisted of presentations from industry partners, including Siemens, GMCA, and Zero Carbon, who introduced key environmental challenges aligned with the 5 pillars of GMCA’s Environmental plan. Students then worked in groups to develop innovative responses, before pitching solutions to their peers and industry experts.

This initiative not only fosters critical thinking and collaboration but also provides students with a platform to present their solutions at the upcoming Green Summit in December.

One participant shared: “It’s incredible how all the diverse perspectives from all our universities made our insights sharper and more actionable. Proud to be part of such a powerful collaborative initiative for a greener future!”
