Manchester Access Programme – experiencing university life online
The Manchester Access Programme is the University’s flagship widening participation scheme. One of the highlights of the programme is the annual MAP University Life Conference where students get to experience the fun, social side of going to university. Usually a residential event, this year over 530 MAP students took part in the live University Life Conference delivered via Zoom due to lockdown restrictions.
The conference included an interactive workshop focused on transferable skills, which also highlighted campaigning opportunities, such as Marcus Rashford’s Free School Meals campaign. Students could also take part in a social event in collaboration with the University of Manchester’s Students’ Union.
Michaela Galvin, a Coordinator on the programme said: “We know from previous years how popular the conference is and what a positive impact it can have. The University is committed to widening access and despite all the challenges with COVID-19 this year, we wanted to ensure that all our MAP students had the opportunity of a social experience.”
Delivering live events gave students, ambassadors and staff an important opportunity to connect, as Asif Omer from the Students’ Union explained: “After being stuck at home for months, it was fantastic to see so many lovely faces engaging in what the Students Union is all about. The interaction is something I have missed dearly and I had so much fun. Thanks to the University Life Conference for having me.”
Dr Mandy Crow, Undergraduate Recruitment and WP Manager added: “We are thrilled that so many MAP Students were able to participate in the University Life Conference this year. It was a real team effort and I’d like to thank all our MAP students, student ambassadors and colleagues across the University and the Students’ Union for making this possible. We’re already looking forward to next year’s event!”
