Why I chose the University of Manchester

The University of Manchester’s work across research, teaching, and social responsibility is making a global impact, improving lives and driving progress in society. Our leading position in various Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) rankings reflects our dedication to these principles.

In the 2024 Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, the University was ranked first in the UK and Europe, and second in the world, for our contributions to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). We were also ranked top in the UK and Europe, and third worldwide, in the QS World University Sustainability Rankings.

This commitment to social responsibility appeals to students, who are eager to not only learn about critical global issues but also be part of an institution which actively addresses them.

When asked why they chose to study at The University of Manchester, many students highlighted the University’s strong focus on social responsibility and sustainability. One student mentioned: “The University’s sustainability initiatives and its support for building start-ups were major reasons for my decision.”

Geography student, Aiden, said he chose Manchester because: “It’s one of the top universities globally when it comes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. So not only would I be learning about these critical issues and their solutions, but I’d be doing so at an institution that is walking the walk.”

A distinctive feature of the University is the University College for Interdisciplinary Learning (UCIL). UCIL modules bring together students from diverse disciplines to explore complex global issues, including sustainability. UCIL offers a broad range of interdisciplinary courses, from Crisis of Nature: Issues in Environmental History to AI: Robot Overload, Replacement or Colleague? These courses enrich students’ learning experiences by broadening their perspectives and equipping them with skills to tackle the world’s most pressing challenges.

Our socially responsible teaching ensures that all our graduates are informed, inspired and equipped to address global socio-political and environmental challenges.

There are also lots of extra-curricular activities that students can get involved in that can really make a difference.
