Technical apprentices reach new heights

Founded in 1941, Outward Bound are an educational charity with a mission to inspire young people to defy their limitations, so they become strong, resilient, and curious, ready for the challenges of life.

On the western shores of the Lake District, Eskdale became the July destination for a group of apprentices beginning their careers at the University. The programme of activities was active and fast paced, based in the real wilderness environments that surround Eskdale during probably the hottest week in the UK in history. Based on experiential learning the group was encouraged to be actively involved and pushed out of their comfort zone with challenges tailored to get the best from the group.

Our University Skills and Development Team agreed a set of learning objectives with Outward Bound trainers prior to arrival consisting of the following:

  • Reflect on the role mindset plays in enabling continuous personal development.
  • Explore a proactive approach to managing self.
  • Understand the importance of clear communication when working with others.
  • Use feedback and reflection to create an action plan to support future development.

Unusually for these initiatives, wifi was available on site in the social hub. However, this did not exist anywhere else to promote community living and working together.

Lauren O’Hara our Operations Administration Assistant and ex-apprentice commented: “The Outwood Bound Trust staff pushed us all out of our comfort zones and mindsets whilst providing us with an amazing sense of achievement at the end of every day. A truly inspirational week which will change us all for the better, forever.”
