The 2020 Dame Kathleen Ollerenshaw Public Lecture will be held on Tuesday 13 October 2020, 6pm. The Ollerenshaw Lecture is a prestigious annual lecture in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Manchester, named in honour and recognition of Dame Kathleen Ollerenshaw.

This year’s lecture will be presented by Katie Steckles. Katie is a mathematician based in Manchester, who gives talks and workshops and writes about mathematics. She finished her PhD in 2011, and since then has talked about maths in schools, at science festivals, on BBC radio and TV, at music festivals, as part of theatre shows and on the internet. Mathematical Stories

Mathematics is a broad and complex subject, and it can be easy to forget that mathematical ideas and techniques were invented and discovered by real people. Mathematician Katie Steckles tells the stories of some of those who spent months, years and even lifetimes developing the maths we use today, and explores how their lives and work across the centuries are connected through mathematics.

Unlike previous years, the lecture this year will be held online due to COVID-19. The lecture will begin at 6pm.

Attendance for this event is free of charge and all are welcome. However, spaces are limited and registration is required. We will be sending all registered guests a link and password to the zoom lecture a few days prior.
