Talking Maths in Public Online Conference 2021

by | May 25, 2021

We are very excited to announce that booking is open for the biennial maths communicators conference Talking Maths in Public (TMiP), which will be running online from 25 –  28 August 2021, virtually hosted by the ICMS in Edinburgh.

The TMiP conference is for anyone involved (or interested in getting involved) in maths communication, engagement and outreach – basically, anyone who wants to share their enthusiasm for maths with non-specialists.

We’ve got a full programme across four half-days, with sessions led by experienced STEM communicators – conference attendees can meet and network with other maths communicators, discuss key topics relating to maths outreach, and take part in workshops, panel sessions and talks aimed at sharing ideas and best practice in a variety of different areas. These sessions, along with networking, lunchtime and evening socials will run from Wednesday – Friday, including plenty of breaks, followed by a half-day on Saturday of more informal networking and recreational maths-related activities.

Tickets for TMiP 2021 cost £25 for the entire event, including a physical conference pack (posted to you) and access to any session recordings for a limited time after the event.

More details and a full programme are available on the TMiP website (http://talkingmathsinpublic.uk), which will continue to be updated as additional details are confirmed.

We have bursaries available for those who are not able to cover the cost of attending, as well as a limited pot of funding to help support those who would incur additional accessibility costs. More details are available on our website, including information on accessibility and the platforms we intend to use. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask: info@talkingmathsinpublic.uk.

There are opportunities for participants to contribute by:

  • Running an exemplar maths activity workshop, where they have the chance to share a short, online version of one of their own workshops and get feedback, and/or
  • Giving a 5-minute lightning talk, where they could showcase a maths outreach project or activity.

Details of how to submit a talk or workshop will be sent to conference attendees when they book their ticket.

We will also be hosting a virtual exhibition space where conference attendees will be able to visit stalls of maths and other STEM communication organisations, and an accompanying community showcase where they will be able to chat to stall holders.

Our in-person events in Bath in 2017 and Cambridge in 2019 were a great success, and we’re very pleased to be able to bring you the 2021 event online. Please do share the news with potentially interested friends and colleagues – in case you need it, an event poster is available here:http://talkingmathsinpublic.uk/resources/poster_2021.pdf
