Manchester-China Friendship Programme expands as the social inclusion programme continues to grow

Manchester-China Friendship Programme The Manchester China Institute has worked closely with the Manchester China Forum (MCF) and the University to help integrate new Chinese students into campus life, while simultaneously enriching the campus experience for local students.

The Manchester-China Friendship Programme (MCFP) seeks to further develop mutual understanding and friendships between British and Chinese students, particularly important at a time when anti-Asian prejudice, discrimination, and aggression has increased in the UK and around the world—and China’s relations with the West have deteriorated.

The programme consists of Manchester-based “host” students who are tasked with building relationships with newly arrived Chinese students. This year, the number has increased from 54 to 110. Cultural activities and events are organised to celebrate both Chinese culture and specifically, Manchester to enable the participants to build bridges and make those first steps to forge long-lasting relationships. Alongside a planned series of events, the programme culminates in an end-of-year ceremony where the achievements of the scheme’s participants are recognised.

This year, participants have celebrated Chinese New Year together, had an organised historical tour of Manchester and participated in a dumpling-making masterclass, amongst other things. For the remaining part of this 2022-2023 year, there will be an excursion to the Peak District, practical careers-related workshops, dragon boat racing in Salford and a session at Manchester Museum with renowned environmental artist, Ling Tan. Through this prism of Sino-British cultural exchange, Chinese and British students can better understand each other’s cultural backgrounds, learn from one another, and promote the positive development of UK-China relations.
